Tanks on Tarawa

PROLOGUE

The invasion of Tarawa was important to the war in the Pacific because Tarawa was to become an air base for the Allies.  This base would also enable the Allies to bombard the Marshall Islands, the next stepping stone in the long route to Japan.  The capture of the Gilbert Islands would also deny the Japanese these same islands as an airbase from which they  could threaten the supply lines to Australia.
The story we will tell here is of the contributions made by the men and the tanks of the 1st Corps, Medium Tank Battalion, Company C, Of the USMC, and the part they played in the overall effort.
We will be concentrating only on this particular unit, except as other units interacted with them.
